Where Can You Wear a Sauna Suit

Read this blog to find out where you can wear a sauna suit, why you would want to, and a few things you should know about them before buying.

Thinking of getting a sauna suit, or you already got one, but you’re wondering – where can you wear a sauna suit? The good news is, these suits are suitable for being worn just about anywhere, including at home on your couch snacking on your favourite crisps.

If you want to find out the details, we will cover everything you need to know in this article. So, for all the new and questioning owners of a sauna suit, all of your questions will be answered.

A Quick Rundown on the Sauna Suit

A Quick Rundown on the Sauna Suit

Sauna suits were popularised in the 1980s, and have since become an important tool in the worlds of athletes. These suits are essentially a type of waterproof jacket that will retain sweat and body heat as you exercise while wearing it. As you exercise more, more heat gets built up, and you release more liquid through your pores.

This effect can have a range of benefits, which we will have a look at in the section below.

Potential Benefits of Wearing Them

Sauna suits can have many benefits, but these are the main ones to be aware of:

  • Muscles are protected and form better – muscular hypertrophy is when our bodies release heat shock proteins as a result of being exposed to intense heat, and it helps our bodies build muscle.
  • Your circulation is improved – improved circulation allows you to work better, faster, and more efficiently because your muscles get all the oxygen they need.
  • Helps you lose water weight – too much water weight can be bad, and many athletes may need to shed some of this weight to qualify for certain competitions at weigh-ins, where they need to stay below a particular weight.
  • Keeps you warm in cold weather – sauna suits keep heat inside the suit and against your skin, making them the perfect tool for exercising in cold weather when you might be tempted to just stay in bed under the warm covers.
  • Improves oxygen uptakeresearch has shown that wearing a sauna suit helps to improve cardiovascular health by increasing the amount of oxygen our bodies can take up, which will improve our overall health and fitness.
  • Reduce the risk of injury – warmth combats muscle pain and sensitivity while reducing the amount of lactic acid in the body and keeping muscles more relaxed, which all lead to improved fitness and comfort.

What Are Sauna Suits Used for?

What Are Sauna Suits Used for?

These suits get used during exercise to help with the above list we mentioned. They are typically worn for a set amount of time for any chosen exercise – from jogging to lifting weights – in order to build up heat and make you sweat more.

Are They Effective?

Over the years, research looking into whether sauna suits really work or not has been a hot topic. Many people want to prove or discredit the effectiveness and usefulness of sauna suits, with all kinds of conflicting information found.

But it’s difficult to argue about numbers and research when the people who use them consistently for their workouts have such positive things to say. Because of this, it’s difficult to ignore the experiences of anyone who uses them frequently without the idea of a research paper in mind.

However, we will say that sauna suits are not the magical cure to fix everything. They have limitations, and they are only a tool for your workouts, not the solution. So, if you were hoping to stick on a sauna suit and shed 50 pounds, we have bad news for you.

Where Can You Wear a Sauna Suit?

One of the great things about sauna suits is that you can essentially wear them anywhere – except for in a sauna. You can go to the gym in a sauna suit, work out at home, do your shopping, anything you like.

Of course, the overall look of a sauna suit might not be appropriate for just any event, but they are comfortable and easy to wear, and resemble a regular tracksuit. The only real difference is that the ankles, wrists, and neck will be tighter so that the heat stays trapped against your skin rather than escaping, and the material is not the comfy cotton you might be used to.

Sauna suits have the added benefit of being casual and comfortable, which means that you can easily wear it at home while watching TV, if you really wanted to. Although we would recommend only whipping the suit out for your exercise sessions, there’s nothing stopping you.

How Often Should You Wear These Suits?

Then how long should you wear a sauna suit? You shouldn’t use a sauna suit every single day. We suggest using them for short periods of time when starting out, just to stay safe. Anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes initially is a good amount of time, and it gives you the chance to get used to the heat.

As time progresses, and you get more used to it, you can increase this to an hour. However, we wouldn’t recommend exceeding this because of the risk of overheating and dehydration. When you’re sweating buckets, it should come as no surprise that there are a few things that you should be careful of.

Sauna Suit Safety – What You Should Know

Sauna Suit Safety – What You Should KnowHeat can be dangerous – especially if you aren’t used to it. In the UK, temperatures between 26-32°C are dangerous for prolonged exercise, and anything above 32°C puts you at risk of heatstroke and exhaustion.

So, it makes sense to not use something like a sauna suit when temperatures are climbing. You might think that you can handle the heat, but the combination of summer and these suits will have you sweating like it’s the last time – and both dehydration and heat stroke are two very real risks that you need to bear in mind.

It’s also useful to know that anyone with diabetes can become dehydrated more easily, as can anyone who is experiencing diarrhoea, drank too much alcohol, or exercised and sweated a lot. So, be careful in what you choose to do, and take special care to drink plenty of water if you have been drinking, been sick, are exercising, or have diabetes, even if you aren’t planning on wearing a sauna suit any time soon.

Listen to Your Body

It’s crucial to always be listening to your body and its limitations. Because wearing a sauna suit puts you at increased risk of experiencing heatstroke and dehydration, you need to be paying special attention to the way you are feeling and how your body reacts to the suit.

Heatstroke is an emergency, and needs to be treated as such. If the symptoms of overheating (like headaches, nausea, tiredness, or dizziness) don’t go away after 30 minutes, and you are unable to cool down, you should call 999.

Symptoms of heatstroke can include the following:

  • Losing consciousness
  • Fits or seizures
  • Lack of coordination
  • Confusion
  • Racing heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath/quick breathing
  • A very high body temperature
  • Hot skin but no sweating (skin may also look red)

Similarly, dehydration is a danger, and you should get out of your sauna suit if you experience:

  • Sunken eyes
  • Tiredness
  • Dry tongue, lips, and mouth
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Feeling thirsty
  • Urine with a strong odour and darker colour
  • Urinating less than you should be or less than usual
