Should I Get 10OZ or 12 Oz Boxing Gloves?
The global market for boxing gloves is currently valued at $1.45 billion, showing the immense popularity of the combat sport all over the world.
When it comes to picking the right boxing gloves, we recommend doing as much research as possible before you commit to buying, so that you don’t end up with a badly-fitting glove that can’t keep you safe.
Are you wondering, should I get 10oz or 12oz boxing gloves?
Well, we will provide some tips in this article, to help you decide whether 10oz or 12oz boxing gloves are most suitable for you.
What size boxing gloves should I get?
Boxing gloves are not measured in sizes ranging from small to extra-large. Rather, boxing gloves are measured by weight, usually in ounces.
For example, for a 12oz pair of gloves, each glove will weigh 12 ounces.
To work out which type of boxing gloves you need, read this handy chart below:
| 4 oz | For children aged 4 to 5 years old. |
| 6 oz | For children aged 5 to 7 years old. |
| 8 oz | For children aged 7 to early teens. |
| 10 oz | Thinly padded glove, ideal for light pad work. |
| 12 oz | Slightly more padding, good for pad work & bag work. |
| 14 oz | An all-round training glove, good for pad work, bag work and light sparring. |
| 16 oz | A protective glove, good for pad work, bag work and hard sparring. |
If the glove you choose is too tight, then size up.
Or if it’s too roomy, then size down.
Should I get 10oz or 12oz boxing gloves?
Can’t decide between 10oz or 12oz gloves? Take a look at our summary below:
10oz boxing gloves
The 10oz gloves are actually the smallest possible adult-size boxing glove. If you size down any less than this, you will find that those gloves will be a bit too snug for your hands, as they are actually intended for children!
10oz gloves are excellent for light pad work and sparring with a partner, because they are durable, without feeling feel too heavy on the arms.
12oz boxing gloves
12oz gloves are two ounces heavier than the 10oz gloves. So, the 12oz gloves will fatigue the boxer faster, as they have more weight in them than the 10 oz gloves.
However, the 12oz gloves offer better protection for the boxer’s hands, as well as for the safety of their sparring partner or opponent.
The 12oz gloves are ideal for bag work and pad work, because they are lightweight enough for you to throw fast punches, and they contain more padding and cushioning for your hands and wrists than the 10oz gloves do.
Should I get 10oz or 12oz boxing gloves?
Well, if you need gloves to aid you in all aspects of boxing training: for the punch bag, sparring, pad work, and for a match, then 12oz is your best bet.
It is a versatile glove that can be used for multiple boxing training scenarios, as it is neither overly heavy (like 16oz gloves), nor
But if you are new to boxing, and you are only looking to train lightly on focus pads, then we recommend going with 10oz gloves.
You can also choose your boxing glove according to your weight class:
Whereas, 10oz gloves are suitable for women in the 50 to 60kg weight category, and men in the 51 to 63kg.
What size gloves do professional boxers use?
Amateur boxers who compete in the welterweight division or lower, use 10oz gloves.
For older fighters and heavyweight boxers, 16oz gloves are the most common glove size.

Can I hit a punch bag if I am only wearing hand wraps?
Yes, you can punch a heavy bag with just hand wraps. Hand wraps protect your wrist, knuckles and thumbs when you are boxing. They also help reduce the fatigue that comes with a strong punch.
So, warming up with some light bag work, while only wearing hand wraps, is perfectly fine.
Don’t be tempted to ignore the hand wraps and start punching the bag with your bare fists. This could cause serious hand pain and injuries. You might end up using the incorrect form, which will throw you off.
If you can’t be bothered to spend five minutes wrapping your hands, we recommend practising some shadowboxing in front of a mirror instead.
