Is a 3FT Punching Bag Good?

Are you looking to purchase a new punching bag, to elevate your boxing training to new heights? Then, there are a few factors which you should consider, including the size, type, weight, and how to install it in the space you have available.

Punching bags are generally available in the sizes 1-foot, all the way to 7-foot.

But is a 3ft punching bag good? We will discuss this question in this article, which we hope you find useful.

What is a 3ft punching bag?

A 3ft punching bag is a standard bag which is brilliant for both newbies to boxing, and experienced boxers. It weighs around 25kg, but you can usually make them heavier or lighter by adding more or less filling.

Punching bags that are 4ft and over tend to be heavier, so they are designed for more intense hard bag training. Expert boxers tend to go for these heavier punching bags.

Is a 3ft punching bag good?

So, is a 3ft punching bag good, in comparison to their 4ft+ counterparts? Well, yes, 3ft punching bags are excellent for all kinds of boxing training. The 3ft size is ideal for boxers of any height and ability, including professionals.

You won’t be at a disadvantage if you train with a 3ft punching bag. It will give you enough surface area to hit, jab and kick to your heart’s content, and work up a sweat!

What’s more, the 3ft punching bags are easy to clean and maintain: simply wipe it down after every workout, to keep any nasty germs away.

Because 3ft punching bags are smaller than 4ft+ bags, they also require less space to be installed, making them perfect for your home gym.

How long should I punch a punching bag?

You should train with a punching bag for short bursts at a time, and stop the workout when you become fatigued. Experienced boxers can go for much longer, because they have built up the stamina over time, and they use other training activities to complement their bag work.

For beginners, we recommend hitting a punching bag for around 10 to 15 minutes a day, but we urge you to stop as soon as you become tired. Take rest breaks if you need to, and don’t forget to hydrate with plenty of water, to keep yourself refreshed.

As your body gets used to the feeling of punching bag workouts, you can gradually increase the duration of your training sessions.

Do punching bags damage hands?

If you aren’t using your punching bag correctly, then you can suffer a nasty injury.

It is possible to damage your hands or wrists if:

  • you wear the incorrect boxing gloves
  • you don’t wear any boxing gloves
  • you use the incorrect form when hitting the bag
  • you don’t wrap your hands effectively
  • you punch too aggressively
  • you are tired, but you continue to punch the bag
  • you don’t follow instructions from a coach, personal trainer or training partner

Can you hit a punching bag with just hand wraps?

Yes, it is perfectly fine to punch a heavy bag with just hand wraps. Hand wraps protect your wrist, knuckles and thumb. They also help reduce the fatigue that comes with a strong punch.

So, warming up with some light bag work, while only wearing hand wraps, is perfectly fine.

Don’t be tempted to skip the hand wraps altogether and start punching the bag with your bare fists. This could cause severe aches in your hands and even serious hand injuries. You might end up using the incorrect form, which will throw you off.

If you can’t be bothered to spend five minutes wrapping your hands, do some shadowboxing in front of a mirror instead.

How do I stay safe when using a punching bag?

  • Don’t work out for more than 15 minutes at a time, if you are a beginner.
  • Always wear the correct type of boxing gloves, which have padding to provide protection for your hands and wrists.
  • Wrap your hands with hand wraps, to provide a barrier and protect the bones and muscles in your hands.
  • Always follow the instructions and guidance from your coach or personal trainer, as they can provide the instructions on the safest punching techniques.
  • Ensure you have plenty of space to carry out your punching bag workout, as you may have to move your feet and turn your body at different angles.
  • If you have installed a punching bag in your home, make sure it is fixed securely. Also, ensure there are no objects close by that could be a hazard. For instance, move away any objects that you could trip over, or make sure your punching bag doesn’t crash into a glass cabinet.
  • Punch the bag, but do not push it. It should not swing away from you.
  • To make the punching easier, try measuring where the punch will land on the bag first, so you can observe the distance from your hand to the bag.
  • If the punch bag is too heavy for you, remove some of the filling inside.
  • Remember to stay well hydrated and take rest breaks (and stop altogether) if you get tired.
