The importance of punchbag training properly

Using a punchbag (properly) has a host of physical and technical benefits, which you can discover below:

Physical benefits:

  • Punchbag training is a fantastic cardio workout. The continuous movement and striking elevate your heart rate, strengthening your heart and lungs, and improving overall endurance.
  • Each punch engages multiple muscle groups
  • , including your shoulders, arms, back, core, and legs (for generating power). Consistent training builds strength and explosive power in these areas.
  • Repeatedly hitting the bag builds stamina in your muscles, allowing you to train for longer periods without fatigue.
  • Maintaining your stance, moving around the bag, and timing your punches all contribute to improved hand-eye coordination, balance, and overall body awareness.
  • Punchbag workouts are calorie-intensive, helping you burn fat and build lean muscle mass, which aids in weight loss and maintenance.
  • The impact of hitting the bag can help strengthen your bones and the connective tissues in your hands and wrists (when done with proper form and protection).
  • Unlike some exercises that isolate specific muscle groups, punchbag training engages your entire body, providing a comprehensive workout.

Technical benefits:

  • The bag allows you to practice and refine your punches, footwork, and combinations without the pressure of hitting a moving opponent. You can focus on form, power generation, and accuracy.
  • By consistently practicing with proper technique and engaging your whole body in each strike, you can significantly increase the power behind your punches.
  • Working on the bag helps you develop the speed and timing necessary for effective striking. Drills focusing on rapid combinations improve your reaction time.
  • Punching the bag rhythmically helps you develop a sense of timing and flow in your movements and combinations, which is crucial in combat.
  • Repetitive practice on the bag helps ingrain proper striking techniques into your muscle memory, making them more natural and automatic.

What are the 6 worst training mistakes when using punchbags?

What are the 6 worst training mistakes when using punchbags?

Punchbags require a specific procedure before and during use to ensure you get the best training without risking injury. Here are the 6 worst mistakes you can make when choosing to use a punchbag.

  1. Ignoring your warm-up

The warm-up is the most critical part of any workout. Especially if you aren’t active on a daily basis. A warm-up gets the blood pumping and gets you ‘in the zone’ for your punchbag workout.

Warm ups also help to prevent injury, by just going headfirst (or fist first) into your punchbag, you run the risk of pulling a muscle, or tiring yourself out quicker than normal.

You can employ a warm-up procedure for about 15 minutes, be sure to include cardio like skipping, shadow-boxing press, ups, and light stretches.

      2. Punching without wraps and gloves

Hand wraps and gloves are not just for boxers to wear before a fight, they are critical in ensuring stability, careful conditioning, and avoiding injury. A hand wrapped, when wrapped properly, holds your fist into place, preventing instances of your wrist giving way on certain punches.

Boxing gloves provide a helpful cushion for your knuckles, which can be vital with especially hard punchbags. Boxing gloves also prevent the skin of your knuckles from being scraped, cut, and damaged.

Without wearing boxing gloves, if you punch a bag and scratch your skin, the germs from the bag can cause infections and other skin issues. You can fix this by purchasing and learning to properly wear hand wraps and boxing gloves.

      3. Punching with no technique

Technique is everything, even when working on a punchbag. A punchbag allows you to refine your technique. Punching wildly with no technique can result in injury, and doesn’t help your boxing skills.

Even if you have never boxed before, you should get guidance on the fundamentals before beginning to work on a punchbag, this helps build good habits if you ever require boxing skills to defend yourself.

Going to your local boxing club, or training with someone trained in the fundamentals, can go a long way in helping you punch with proper techniques.

      4. Disregarding the movement of the bag

As you punch, the punchbag will sway, this can change with the power, combination, and direction of your punches. You can use this movement to your advantage, practicing dodging and non-static combinations.

In addition, allowing the bag to violently sway can strain its chains, you shouldn’t let your punchbag sway. A seasoned boxer can provide tips on how to stop it with boxing techniques, rather than stopping it and stopping your flow during practice.

Having an awareness of how your punch affects the bag movement, will ensure your bag does not dangerously sway.

       5. Not using footwork

Footwork is the foundation of boxing, your foot placement and movement all dictates the effectiveness of your punches, it should never be neglected, even when using a punchbag.

A punchbag is the perfect opportunity to practice your footwork without the worry of being hit back. Circling the bag, shifting through stances are just some ways you can improve footwork when using the punchbag.

        6. Not cleaning the bag after use

Due to the sweat generated during usage of the bag (especially those in public gyms etc) there is a chance of getting affected by a staph infection and more. Always clean the bag after you have used it to avoid others being affected. This is especially true if the bags are also being kicked.

A simple antibacterial wipe can go a long way in keeping a bag clean.

Bonus tip – Neglecting structure

Another critical point to consider is what you’re actually doing with the bag, are you just punching it mindlessly until you get tired? By doing this, you can tire out quickly, and not really address your technique properly.

You should always have an idea of how you’re going to approach your time on the punchbag. For example, having 3 rounds of 2 minutes on the punchbag, with each round focusing on a different aspect of your boxing, is a great way for beginners to understand the demands of boxing training.
