Why Is a Yorker Called a Yorker?

Yorker. Googly. Bronze Duck.

You may believe that these are random words, but think again! These are all terms which are important in the world of cricket.

Cricket has a rich history, having originated as early as the 1600s in England, and gaining widespread popularitiy in countries like Australia and South Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. That explains why cricket jargon is so varied, as it reflects the evolution of the sport.

In this article, we will answer the question ‘why is a yorker called a yorker?’, and recommend some of our favourite pieces of cricket equipment.

What is a Yorker in cricket?

A Yorker refers to a type of delivery bowled by a bowler during a cricket match. It is a ball bowled which hits the cricket pitch around the batsman’s feet. This makes it challenging for the batsman to hit the ball with his cricket bat.

There are different types of Yorkers that can be bowled during a cricket match:

  • Slow Yorker: where the ball is bowled slower than the bowler’s regular speed.
  • Fast Yorker: where the ball is bowled at a faster pace than usual.
  • Swinging Yorker: where the ball moves in the air, on its way to the batsman, swinging in or out.
  • Toe Crusher: where the ball is aimed at the batsman’s feet, so he should move out of the way before it hits him and causes an injury.

So, why is a yorker called a yorker?

It is widely believed that the term ‘Yorker’ originated because cricket players from York, England, bowled them so often.

Another theory suggests that the term originates from the 20th century slang word ‘york’, which meant sharp, quick-witted, or to cheat someone. For instance, someone might say “I’ve been yorked!” if they were deceived by a crook.

What is a Leg Spin?

This is a type of spin bowling. Here, the leg spin bowler (also known as the leg spinner) bowls the ball with their right arm, with wrist spin action, which causes the ball to spin from right to left in the pitch.

When the ball bounces, the spin causes the ball to deviate sharp from right to left, away from the leg side of a right-handed batsman.

What is a Leg Break?

A Leg Break is a delivery used by right-handed cricketers. The leg spin bowler will hold the cricket ball in the palm of the hand, with the seam running across under all the fingers.

When bowling, the wrist is rotated to the left, allowing the ball to roll over the little finger and spin anti-clockwise. The ball then bounces and spins to the left, away from a right-handed batsman’s leg side

What is a Googly?

A Googly (also known as a wrong’un) is a type of delivery bowled by a leg spinner, but it is intended to confuse the batsman. This move appears to be a leg break, but it spins the ball away from the batsman’s stumps after it has pitched, which throws the batsman off.

It is very difficult to execute a Googly, as it requires the correct technique and lots of practice to pull it off.

What is a Bronze Duck?

In cricket, a duck is a sad moment for a player. If a player is ‘out for a duck’, it means they have been bowled out or dismissed without scoring any runs whatsoever. This means a big zero will go against their name on the scoreboard.

There are different types of ducks in a cricket game:

The bowler’s job is to bowl the ball in a certain way, to try and get the ball to hit the stumps. This would mean that the batsman is knocked out.

At Sports Maxx, we have our Maxx 1x Cricket Wooden Stump, which is perfect for any cricket game.

Cricket gloves

Every wicket-keeper should wear cricket gloves, so they can catch the ball safely and prevent injury to their fingers and palms.

Gloves should also be worn by the batsman, in order to reduce the shock in their hands when they hit the ball with the bat.

Our Maxx Pro Core Series Two Men’s Batting Gloves will provide great protection for your hands and lessen the blow of a fast-moving cricket ball. An added bonus is that the white and gold design looks super elegant!

If you are left-handed, then you are in luck. For you, we have our Maxx Pro Tiger Series Men’s Left Hand Batting Pads and Gloves.
