With lots of different names for boxing belts and the different weight categories, it can be challenging to understand just what a title is that any boxer is fighting for.

Do you want to know which is the most prestigious? Or which boxing belt is the most important? Maybe you’re wondering why there are so many boxing belts out there. In this post, we tell you everything you need to know about boxing belts as well as who we are at Maxx Pro Boxing and how we can help you to start your own boxing journey, even at home because we know that boxing isn’t just for the pros.

Boxing belt explained

There is no single governing body for boxing which means that decides on the rules and belts, but in the case of boxing, there are 4 governing bodies. The International Boxing Federation (IBF) is a corporation to obtain greater efficiency and uniformity in the supervision of professional boxing as well as to encourage and assist professional boxing.

The World Boxing Association (WBA)  is one of the oldest organisations which sanction professional boxing. They stand by the fundamental principles of ethics, morals, loyalty, honesty and good faith in professional boxing.

The World Boxing Organization  (WBO) is the third boxing organisation and finally, there is World Boxing Council (WBC) altogether they make up the four associations sanctioning professional boxing. For each of the 17 weight categories in boxing, there can be 4 world champions and each of these governing bodies have their own belts, which is why there are so many.

Sanctioning bodies in boxing

The primary function of the sanctioning bodies is to manage rankings for the different divisions they cover. Champion belts are awarded to the champion in their weight division and these belts change hands whenever a reigning champion loses.

The most prestigious titles in boxing are considered to be the world titles sanctioned by the four major governing bodies in boxing.

Benefits of boxing

Taking part in regular boxing is a great exercise for the whole body. You don’t need to be at the top of your fitness level before starting boxing but you do need to have a certain level of stamina and agility to get started with the basics. In addition to that, it’s not only exercise that’s good for the body but great for the mind too.

Physical benefits

You may be under the impression that boxing only works your upper body but this is a myth as you use your entire body to generate force and power behind each strike. When you’re doing boxing training, you’ll be working on each muscle group in your body, which in turn burns lots of calories and strengthen your muscles. If you’re looking to burn fat, tone up or improve your strength and power then boxing is the sport for you.

Psychological benefits

Not only are there physical benefits but there are numerous mental health benefits of boxing too. Boxing helps to relieve stress, you can switch off from the outside world and boxing stimulates endorphin production. During COVID 19 we saw a surge in people exercising from home and with our boxing equipment, anyone can start boxing without needing to leave the house, to start working on now only their physical health but their mental health too.

Boxing as a hobby

Boxing as a hobby

If you want to get into boxing as a hobby first you’ll need some equipment. You’ll want to consider what boxers wear to train so you look the part but you’ll certainly want to look into what you need to start.

Yes, it is possible to train like a boxer at home and you might be surprised to learn that you don’t need too much equipment to teach yourself boxing at home, but here is a list of just some of the things you might need:

  • Gloves and hand wraps– as soon as you begin with punching bags or punching pads, you’ll need to get yourself a decent pair of boxing gloves and hand wraps to protect your hands.
  • Focus pads– these are great for small spaces. They’re small, handheld, durable cushioned pads worn by a partner who moves with the person boxing to help them improve different aspects of their boxing technique. So, to use these pads, you need a partner and can’t be used on your own at home.
  • Punching bags- these are one of the best options for boxers who want to box at home. They allow you to practise many boxing skills and engage in cardiovascular exercise, without needing anybody else.

You can choose between free-standing punch bags where there’s no need to attach them to a wall or hanging punch bags. Punching bags are great equipment to box at home because you can use them on your own and they’re easy to use, even for beginners.

Punching Bags

Once you have chosen your boxing gloves ( we recommend training gloves for home use or basic training) you’ll need some equipment and a punch bag is a versatile piece of equipment that can help you develop your boxing ability and fitness right from day one.

Using heavy punching bags will predominantly work out your arms, shoulders, back and abdominal muscles, however, as you manoeuvre around the bag, you’re also engaging your legs and glutes. Even more, the proper punching technique requires you to shift your weight from your back foot, through your body and into your hand which engages your whole body with each punch.

Not only are punching bags great for stamina and all round endurance training but they’re great for working on your precision, agility, footwork and power behind your strikes. You’ll need some space in your home to fit it in, but they’re also great for the garden if you invest in a free-standing one.

Focus pads

Boxing pads, also known as focus pads or focus mitts, like these Max EC Boxing Curved Arm Pads, are another great piece of boxing equipment if you plan on training with someone else. They’ve cushioned targets for training by boxers, martial arts fighters, and athletes. Athletes have used boxing pads for centuries because they allow you to perform various strikes, hits, kicks, and drills.

One person wears the boxing pads on their hands and holds them up in front of the other boxer, who can hit and strike the pads to their heart’s content. What better way to work up a sweat and burn hundreds of calories? Many people wonder how long boxing pads last and that depends on the quality of pads you buy. At Maxx Pro Boxing, we stock a wide range of good quality boxing pads that will last you anything from 1-3 years.

To conclude, there are many different types of boxing belts because of the 4 governing bodies in boxing and the many different weight categories. The most prestigious belts are considered to be the world titles from each sanctioning body. If you’re interested in boxing, taking it up as a hobby is great for both your mental and physical health and we at Maxx Pro Boxing have an excellent range of equipment for home boxing that you need to get started.
