Do Smaller Gloves Hit Harder?
In the world of boxing, the most important piece of equipment is, arguably, gloves. Without the right type of boxing gloves, no boxer can adequately protect themselves from injury. The wrong gloves will also mean that punches will land slower and less accurately, hence why the correct gloves are the key instrument to success in boxing.
Have you ever wondered, do smaller gloves hit harder? Well, we will explore this question in this article, so keep reading to find out the answer.
How do I choose the right type of boxing gloves?
To choose the correct boxing gloves, follow these tips below:
- Your gloves should fit comfortably over your hands.
- The gloves should provide adequate support for your knuckles and wrists, no matter how hard you punch.
- The gloves shouldn’t slip off when you are boxing.
- The gloves shouldn’t feel tight, restrictive, or cut off your circulation.
- When wearing the gloves, your hands and wrists should not be forced into an unnatural position. Your hand should feel like a semi-clenched fist, with your thumb separated from your four fingers.
- There should be good ventilation within the gloves.
- If there is a Velcro strap on the gloves, it should be long-lasting.
- The gloves shouldn’t feel too bulky.
Do smaller gloves hit harder?
Boxers are constantly looking for ways to improve their punching power. After all, the harder you hit, the more damage you can inflict on an opponent, and the quicker your boxing match will end with your victory!
So, do smaller gloves hit harder?
The answer is, smaller gloves can cause more pain. The smaller the glove, the more force is absorbed by the puncher’s hands and the opponent’s head. Thus, the opponent will feel the force of the blow more than they would if you were wearing larger gloves. This means, theoretically, larger boxing gloves are safer for the opponent because they will cushion the blow of punches much more.
However, this does not mean you should swap out your boxing gloves for a lighter or heavier pair, whenever you feel like it. You and your training partner should choose the appropriate gloves for your weight class and comfort.
Does the weight of boxing gloves matter?
Yes, the weight of your boxing gloves will make all the difference to your training and match readiness.
Boxing gloves are measured in ounces, so you will typically see them available from 4oz, all the way up to 16oz.
Remember, heavier gloves will offer more protection for your hands and wrists, because they are lined with more padding and cushioning.

Do heavier boxing gloves make you punch faster?
Nope, heavier gloves don’t help you hit faster. These are weightier, so they slow down your hands and thus increase the amount of time that it takes for your punches to reach your opponent.
If you want to hit harder, you don’t need to size up your gloves- you just need to work on other areas such as your techniques and positioning.
Can I use MMA gloves for boxing?
No, you must never use MMA gloves for boxing- whether that’s on a punchbag, punch pads or a boxing dummy (body opponent bag). You could severely damage your knuckles, wrists and wrists, and seriously injure your opponent if wear MMA gloves while boxing.
That is because MMA gloves are small, lightweight and open-fingered, which allow the fighter to perform grappling techniques and submissions.
MMA gloves have thinner padding than boxing gloves, so they won’t absorb punches as easily. Some MMA gloves do not come with longer wrist straps, so you won’t have that wrist support needed for boxing training.
Can you punch a punch bag with just hand wraps?
Yes, you can punch a heavy bag with just hand wraps. Hand wraps protect your wrist, knuckles and thumbs when you are boxing. They also help reduce the fatigue that comes with a strong punch.
So, warming up with some light bag work, while only wearing hand wraps, is perfectly fine.
Don’t be tempted to skip the hand wraps altogether and start punching the bag with your bare fists. This could cause severe aches in your hands and even serious hand injuries. You might end up using the incorrect form, which will throw you off.
If you can’t be bothered to spend five minutes wrapping your hands, we recommend practising some shadowboxing in front of a mirror instead.
