What Are Cricket Trousers Called?
Every cricketer needs cricket clothing, ensure maximum comfort and protection, and get the most out of the sport. Sales of cricket clothing and equipment are booming worldwide, as more and more people are discovering the benefits of playing the age-old sport. In fact, the global market for cricket equipment is forecast to reach a staggering $16.92 million by the year 2027, showing the vast demand for cricket gear.
In this article, we will answer the question ‘what are cricket trousers called?’ and explain a cricketer’s uniform in more detail.
What do cricketers wear?
Cricket players wear specific attire during matches. Their clothes must be comfortable and not restrict their movements. These must also help keep the players cool when the weather is sunny.
A cricketer’s uniform includes:
- a cricket cap: often worn by fielders, to reduce the glare from the sunlight or harsh stadium lights.
- a helmet: this is worn by the batsman, the wicketkeeper, and any players who are fielding close to the bat.
- a cricket shirt: known as ‘cricket whites’, these are usually polo shirts with short sleeves, unless the weather is particularly cold.
- cricket shoes: cricketers need sturdy, specialist cricket shoes that sometimes have spikes on the bottom surface, to provide grip.
- cricket pants: cricketers wear long trousers to help protect their legs from injury and the sun, and ensure their leg pads fit comfortably.
- cricket sweater or sleeveless vest: these are less common in warmer countries such as India and Australia, where keeping cool is the priority.
- batting pads: these are leg guards, to shield the legs of a batsman from being hit by a hard cricket ball.
- cricket gloves: to protect the fingers and palms from the painful impact of catching the ball in their hands.

So, what are cricket trousers called?
Cricket trousers are also known as cricket flannels.
When you think of ‘flannels’, the image that springs to mind are the checked or plaid shirts.
But cricket flannels are the white trousers that are part of a cricketer’s uniform. These are lightweight and breathable, to allow for ease of movement during the sport. The fabric should also wick away sweat and moisture from the body, to help keep the wearer cool.
Cricket flannels come with an elasticated waistband, for a comfortable fit.
Additionally, cricket trousers should be roomy enough to accommodate the bulky leg pads that batsmen have to wear.

What is an L guard?
An L guard is an abdominal guard, which is worn by batsmen and wicket-keepers during cricket matches. The ‘L’ is thought to stand for ‘lower’.
Also known as a box or cup, the L guard is a durable, cup-shaped plastic guard. It provides protection to the groin and pelvic region, in case of hard blows.
It is hugely important for cricketers to wear an abdominal guard that covers the entire genital region, because any injuries to the area can be very traumatic and dangerous.
The abdominal guard can be worn directly on the skin, or over the underwear, depending on which is more comfortable for the player. Then, the cricket pants (trousers) are worn on top. The guard should not feel too tight, uncomfortable, or dig into the player’s hips, nor should it slip off when the player is moving or running.
If cricketers want to wear the abdominal guard outside of their underwear, then must also wear compression shorts or a jockstrap over their abdominal guard, to keep it secure.
When wearing an abdominal guard for cricket, you should make sure that it fits properly. Try going for a short jog, to check that it is comfortably fitted and does not move from its position.

Below, we have highlighted some of our favourite pieces of cricket equipment, which are perfect for experienced cricketers, or newbies to the sport:
Leg pads

We highly recommend wearing leg pads during cricket, to protect your lower body from impact with the ball. During the game, the cricket ball can travel through the air at speeds as fast as 95 mph, which is sure to cause a lifelong injury if a player gets hit in their legs, with no leg pads on.
Our Maxx Pro Core Gold Series Men’s Batting Pads offer the ultimate protection to any cricket player. They feature high-density plastazote foam and high-resistance sidebars, to keep the knees and shins protected and cushioned.
If you are looking for protection for your upper legs, then look no further than our Maxx Pro Men’s Cricket Thigh Guard Protector. This lightweight protective guard works effectively to protect your thighs from hardball impact.
Alternatively, opt for our Maxx All In One Thigh Guard Set (Lightweight Dual Thigh Pads). These protective pads offer dual level protection to the thighs. Being lightweight, they will fit comfortably without bunching or squeezing too tight.
Groin guards

In cricket, batters are at risk of any part of their body being hit by a hard ball, with a lot of force. but the groin and pelvic region is particularly at risk of facing unfortunate blows from a fast-travelling cricket ball.
That is why many cricketers choose to protect the groin area with a groin guard.
At Sports Maxx, our groin guards can be used for virtually any sport. They are strong, durable and long-lasting, so you can stay safe and comfortable throughout your match.

Cricket gloves
