Do Pro Boxers Use 10oz Gloves?

Boxing matches are one of the most-watched sporting events in the world, with as many as 1 billion viewers tuning in to see their favourite fighters go head-to-head in the ring.

No professional boxer could fight to their best ability if they wore the wrong pair of gloves.

One of the questions commonly asked by boxing fans is this: do pro boxers use 10oz gloves?

Keep reading to find out the answer.

How heavy are 10oz gloves?

Popularly used by fairly light boxers in competitive fights, 10oz gloves are ideal for honing your skills with a punch bag.

Generally, 10z gloves weigh around 283.5 grams, whereas 12oz gloves weigh 340.2 grams.

As you can see, there is a considerable difference in weight between the two glove sizes.

Heavier gloves (12-16oz) are ideal for training and sparring because they are bulky, so, the added weight will slow the boxer down more, forcing them to speed up their punches and jabs.

This means that 10oz gloves are the lightest possible training gloves. Adults shouldn’t size down any lower than 10oz, as 8oz gloves and lower are aimed at teenagers and children.

So, do pro boxers use 10oz gloves?

Well, professional boxing rules require that competition gloves weigh either 8oz or 10oz unless otherwise stated by the sanctioning body which is sponsoring the match.

For older fighters and heavyweight boxers, 16oz gloves are the most common glove size.

If a pro boxer requires more padding and protection for their hands, then they will size up their gloves accordingly.

For training purposes only, a pro boxer may use larger-size boxing gloves (ranging between 14oz and 20oz), but they will switch to smaller gloves for fights.

Let’s take a look at the glove sizes of a few boxing legends:

What size boxing gloves should I get?

Boxing gloves are not measured in sizes ranging from small to extra-large. Rather, boxing gloves are measured by weight, usually in ounces. For example, for a 12oz pair of gloves, each glove will weigh 12 ounces.

To work out which type of boxing gloves you need, read this handy chart below:

Boxing Glove Size Suitability
4oz For children aged 4 to 5 years old.
6oz For children aged 5 to 7 years old.
8oz For children aged 7 to early teens.
10oz Thinly padded glove, ideal for light pad work.
12oz Slightly more padding, good for pad work & bag work.
14oz An all round training glove, good for pad work, bag work and light sparring.
16oz  A protective glove, good for pad work, bag work and hard sparring.

If the boxing glove is too tight, then size up.

If the gloves are too roomy, then size them down.

How do I choose the right boxing gloves?

You should choose the correct type of boxing gloves, which will protect your hands in the best possible way. Follow our tips below:

  • Your gloves should fit comfortably over your hands.
  • The gloves should provide adequate support for your knuckles and wrists, no matter how hard you punch.
  • The gloves shouldn’t slip off when you are boxing.
  • The gloves shouldn’t feel tight, restrictive, or cut off your circulation.
  • When wearing the gloves, your hands and wrists should not be forced into an unnatural position. Your hand should feel like a semi-clenched fist, with your thumb separated from your four fingers.
  • There should be good ventilation within the gloves.
  • If there is a Velcro strap on the gloves, it should be long-lasting.
  • The gloves shouldn’t feel too bulky.
