Punching bags are a great addition to your home gym if you want to reap the benefits of boxing training without having to pay for a gym membership. However, not everyone has the space to hang a heavy bag in their lounge or garage, so some people prefer to hang their punching bags outside.

You can, of course, train outside and enjoy the sunshine, uneven terrain and breeze while you’re training, but there are some risk factors to training with a punching bag outside, namely exposing your punching bag to the elements. So can punching bags get wet without getting damaged? Let’s have a look.

What Are Punching Bags Made Of?

What Are Punching Bags Made Of?

Punching bags come in different shapes and sizes but whether you have a small speed bag or a larger free-standing bag, they’ll usually be made from the same materials. The outer material of a punching bag, known as the skin, is either made of leather or synthetic leather. Both materials are durable so can withstand heavy punches or kicks for over 10 years, depending on how often they’re used.

Synthetic leather is a cheaper material to manufacture, so synthetic leather punching bags are more affordable but equally as durable as real leather and tend to have the same qualities, so you don’t need to spend a lot of money buying the best punching bag.

The contents of the punching bag differ more, depending on the manufacturer as well as the desired substance from the boxer. Most punching bags tend to be filled with cloth rags as these are cheap to use and provide sufficient weight, sturdiness and resistance to punches without being so solid that they’ll hurt your hands when you punch them. More advanced boxers who require more resistance from a heavy punching bag sometimes have bags filled with sand, however, the downside of these bags is that they don’t spring back after a hefty punch like cloth or foam bags do.

Water-filled punching bags are also available and equally durable. The main benefit of these is that you can buy an empty punching bag and fill it yourself. As you improve and want to use a heavier bag, you can then fill it with more water as required.

Kids’ punching bags are equally durable, but tend to be filled with softer materials like cloth and foam to allow them to be lighter than adult bags and further protect their hands.

Can Punching Bags Get Wet?

Punching bags can get wet in a few ways:

  • An outside punching bag is rained on
  • A punching bag gets damp in humid storage
  • A punching bag gets wet from sweat when training
  • A punching bag gets wet when washed

However, you should avoid getting your punching bag wet as much as possible. Both leather and synthetic leather can be made to repel some water by coating them in synthetic sprays that helps to make them temporarily waterproof. However, even this coating is not entirely waterproof, so water can seep into the seams or tiny holes in the leather and synthetic leather, which are naturally slightly porous.

When leather dries, it stiffens, changing the feel of the fabric and making it less durable and more prone to splitting and tearing, especially when repeatedly battered by punches and kicks. If water gets into the material inside the bag, it can also keep the punching bag damp, making it feel heavier and break more easily, as well as potentially smelling like mould.

To prevent your punching bag from getting wet, you should store it in a dry place, never leave it outside in the elements, and clean it well after use. This will keep the material in its best condition so it can last as long as possible.

How to Clean a Punching Bag

How to Clean a Punching Bag

If you’ve left your punching bag out in the rain and it’s become sodden or mouldy, there’s not a lot you can do to restore it to its original condition. You can dry it thoroughly in the sun and moisturise the skin with a leather conditioner to prevent it from cracking when you next use it, however, the inner materials are likely already damaged and the bag will not last for much longer.

However, if your punching bag is wet with sweat – which will happen even if you wear boxing gloves – you should clean it properly to maintain the materials. After each use, you should wipe down the punching bag with a damp cloth to remove the sweat which may damage the punching bag’s skin. Then wipe the bag with a dry cloth to ensure that all moisture has been removed.

Once a week, you should use a specific leather or synthetic leather cleaning product, or a natural detergent mixed with water to wipe over the punching bag, before drying. Wipe it down again with a dry cloth to remove excess water. This will ensure the bag is sufficiently clean and dry to maintain its durability.

Where to Hang a Punching Bag

Where you hang a punching bag will make a huge difference in keeping it clean and dry. If you choose to hang your punching bag outside, you should remove the bag after each use and store it in a dry space to avoid it getting soaked in rain or damp in your shed. You can’t predict the weather in the UK, especially in summer, so it’s not worth risking your punching bag by leaving it outside overnight.

If you hang your punching bag inside, it’s much easier to maintain. You can either hang your punching bag from a support beam in your ceiling or attach a wall mount to a strong wall and hang your bag from there. If hanging a punching bag for children, make sure you hang it low enough that they can easily reach it.

Kids’ punching bags are also lighter than adults’, usually around half their weight, but you should still make sure you hang them from a sturdy wall as the impact of each strike will put additional pressure on your walls.

If you don’t have strong enough walls or ceilings in your house, or are renting so can’t make major changes, free-standing punching bags are your best option. Simply move them into the middle of the room when you want to train so you can move around the bag and avoid damaging any objects in the room. Or if you’re into MMA, you can train with a grappling dummy.

Why Use a Punching Bag?

Why Use a Punching Bag?

Punching bags have many benefits for children and adults when used regularly; you don’t have to use a punching bag every day, but 4 – 5 times a week is great for your mental and physical health.

Physical Health

Training with a punching bag will:

  • Burn calories
  • Help you lose weight
  • Tone your muscles
  • Oxygenate your muscles and organs
  • Release endorphins

To lose weight you need to be in calorie deficit, so you’ll need to eat fewer calories than you burn, but a 10 to 15-minute session 5 times a week is a great start, as it can be an intense cardio workout, engaging your whole body and burning calories quickly. You won’t gain muscle, but as you lose fat and engage your muscles, you’ll notice your abs, arms and quads begin to tone up, getting you in great shape.

You’ll also feel healthier and more energetic as you’re increasing circulation and your brain releases chemicals that make you feel better.

Mental Health

Endorphins and dopamine rushing through your blood will greatly improve your mood when exercising and afterwards, not to mention the confidence you’ll gain from your healthier and more toned body. But many people feel more confident when practising combat sports as they can see their skills improve and learn how to defend themselves.

Even if you’re not using a punching bag to become a pro boxer, you will also feel a lot better mentally thanks to the physical aggression you can use on the bag, releasing your pent-up negative energy and relieving stress through hitting the bag.
